    A Letter from the Principal

Dear Walter Miller Community,

We’re on the countdown to summer vacation!  Soon, on June 19th, we’ll be standing at the bus port waving good-bye as the last buses pull away, marking the end of another exciting year of learning and growing.

How did we do this year?  As you know, we have asked for your help with our Miller and Neshaminy School District initiatives throughout the year. Here’s a quick review:

¨ Neshaminy Reads/Miller Reads.  Yes….we are continuing to read!  Thank you to the families that have encouraged their children to read at home, helping your children in completing  “Lit Logs” and responding to their reading.  School wide we “celebrated reading” with monthly and special events, such as our Author’s Visit, Miller Night at Barnes and Noble, and the Principal’s Book Chat.

¨ Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.  The community support of this program has been overwhelming.  Yes, I have even had parents calling me to report “bullying” they see as the children walk home from school.  An “extra pair of eyes” is always helpful as we work to make our school a “bully free” community.  Our classroom teachers continue to hold “Morning Meetings” to promote a positive, caring school environment.  In addition, the Olweus Team sponsored monthly and special events, such as “Mix It Up” day and “Light Hearted Messages”.

¨ Let’s Get Writing!  As a school, we made a commitment to improve our students’ writing skills.  Teachers met across grade levels as we all worked to “kick it up a notch” with our expectations for student writing.  I hope that you, as parents, have noticed this and celebrated the writing ability of your children.

At the end of each school year, I look back with gratitude.  I would like to thank all those who make our school the special place it is.  We have a highly trained, dedicated and professional staff of teachers and support personnel.  Special thanks go to our PTO and Executive Board, led by President Colleen Iaquinto, who is “retiring” from her position this year.  Our PTO and parent volunteers work to give us all the “extras” that enhance the learning and social climate of our school.  We will certainly miss the leadership that Mrs. Iaquinto provided in her role as President, Executive Board member and concerned, involved parent.

With the school year coming to a close….let’s get ready for summer!  What does summer have in store for you?   A cool vacation?  Splashing in the backyard pool?  Iced tea and a good book?  Whatever your plans….I wish you a wonderful time with your family!  Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Joan M. Chak
